Well he’s done it again – another great album. “Kenny Chesney – Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates,” was release on September 11. Unlike his previous albums, Chesney did not write any of the music for this one, but he continues to find country songs that sound like his own and reflect his own thoughts on life. The first single, “Never
Wanted Nothing More,” is more of the “Young” and “Living In Fast
Forward” music that were big hits for him in the past, and this one shot
up the charts before the albums release. A new video and “Don’t Blink,”
the second release, is bound to move into the top of the country charts
as well. These songs came out early to whet the appetite of Chesney fans
and they won’t be disappointed by the rest of the album. |

During a recent radio interview on WKLB, Chesney told Boston fans that the songs he selected for this project were ones that reflected where he is today in his life and how much more comfortable he is with himself. This is easy to see in several songs, including “Wife and Kids,” about how he would like to have both some day – just not now, and “Better As a Memory,” about the difficulty of keeping a relationship going (he told the listeners he had written several letters like this to old girlfriends). The song, “Scare Me” seems a follow up to this, and is sure to be a hit. It’s about meeting that someone who just might stop him in his tracks:
A duet with Chesney’s idol and one time mentor, George Strait, is a cute ode to the blue collar worker, “Swing Shift.” He also leaves the quieter tone of the album to rock out with Joe Walsh on “Wild Ride.” In all, this is another Chesney special. Most of the songs on his albums are basically low-key, lots of love songs and some light honky-tonk. But they all seem to ring true regardless of who wrote them, Chesney sings with feeling and owns them. “Poets and Pirates” is more of the same—and you can’t help listening to these songs and hoping there will be many more CDs like this in the future!
