Up and Coming: Travis Rush

Travis Rush’s first CD, “Come and Get It,” has a true country sound.  He is a piano playing singer/songwriter like Phil Vassar, has the attitude of Keith Anderson and yet has his own unique sound like most of the Nashville performers. The difference is, he’s starting out in Portland, OR.

Rush grew up in the northwestern coastal town of Gold Beach, OR. His father was into country music and Rush learned to sing and play piano at an early age. He played with the family band and wrote songs throughout high school.  After graduation, he tried college and took a turn in LA for a music career. Returning home, he opened a restaurant and spent much of the time entertaining the customers.

His new CD is his attempt to make music his full-time career and it’s a very impressive start. Included on the album are 11 of 12 songs he wrote or co-wrote and many are the musical results of his own experiences.

A good example is the rock sounding, “What Mama Don’t Know:”

“I was born where the blue sky meets the sea
That ocean breeze is still a part of me
Raised in the country, they taught me well
Before I do to heaven, gonna raise a little hell…’

There is a mix of ballads, like the lovely, “The Real Thing” and some fast, rocking tunes, the best of which is the CD’s title song “Come and Get It.” The song sounds like the new country being produced by Anderson and the duo Big and Rich.

Rush’s first video will be released shortly and is based on the song “Just For Tonight” – a song written about his short, unhappy marriage and the pain of losing someone you love to alcohol or drugs. The video shows off northwest beauty, his acting ability and rugged good looks.

Music maybe first in Rush’s heart, but he is already committed to charity and helping others. The Travis Rush Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping foster children. He began volunteering to help foster children in 2003 and wrote the beautiful song, “You Gotta Live” about a fellow volunteer’s own experience as a foster child.

Rush will soon begin a national tour. He is a talented young man on his way up. Will he have to make a stop in Nashville to get there? Seems like most country starts do sooner or later – but maybe he has the ability to change that. For more information about Travis Rush visit his website, TravisRush.com.
