Big and Rich Shine: Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace

One thing you can say about Big and Rich is they will never fail to surprise their fans.  Their new CD, “Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace” proves the point—and does it well.

Many country fans have wondered if this duo is really country, given their hits like “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy” and other party type songs. But Big Kenny and John Rich show their true country colors in the CD’s first few cuts. The first song, released as a single, “Lost n the Moment” is beautiful and heartfelt. It has already climbed the charts and is destined to be played over and over at June weddings.

The other ballads including “Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace,” (the title song), and “Eternity” are not only good listening music, they also show that Big and Rich are both tremendously talented songwriters (they co-wrote most of the songs on the album). Their songs have simple lyrics that ring true, like the words of “You Never Stop Loving Someone:”

“It’s complicated when love has faded
And you can’t hold on anymore
You gotta let go even though you know
       Your heart’s gonna hate it
And it just might break it.”

For fans of the more uptempo, rocking songs that Big and Rich are better known for – don’t worry they are here too. There is a “virtual side B” that is devoted to their more traditional music, including “Radio” and “Please Man” with Wyclef Jean.

Some may think the CD’s quick shift from soft to rocking is a bit jarring, but it does seem to work. There is no dening that Big and Rich have wide ranging talents both as singers and songwriters and they will always continue to surprise their listeners.
