Keith Urban Defying Gravity

Keith Urban has just released his newest CD, “Defying Gravity” – a happier, more upbeat group of songs than most of his previous albums.

Urban wrote or co-wrote most of the 11 songs that are about love – found and/or lost and there may be a tendency to look deep in the lyrics for hidden meaning about Urban and his life. However, most of the songs lack the introspection of previous songs like “Tonight I Want to Cry” or “Who Wouldn’t Wanna Be Me.” These new songs are more of finding a good woman to love (yes, and we all know who that woman is for Urban.) Songs like, “If Ever I Could Love:”

“I used to cry our in the middle of the night
Baby hold me tight
But there was nobody beside me
When I opened my eyes
Now I’ve turned a corner on those days and nights
And something inside me is changing
I think I might be starting over…”

The first 2 singles off the album, “Sweet Thing” and “Kiss a Girl” are surface songs – a chance for Urban to romp and bang his guitar to a joyful beat. Even the more serious, “My Heart is Open” seems to have a happier ending:

“I though I was doin’ alright
Being’ alone
I swore I’d never let somebody get close again
I was never gonna let my guard down
Not for anyone
But there’s a light in your eyes and it’s got me movin’ in, oh
And tonight these walls are all coming down.”

It would seem from this album that Urban has left many of his demons, like alcohol and drugs behind and is in a better place as a husband and father. Even the final song on the album, “Thank you,” and  obvious open letter to his wife talks of being grateful for the support he received as he came through darker times.

As a long time fan of Urban’s, I can’t say this is his best work, I’m partial to his darker music, however, it is a fun album and it is good to see Keith Urban  enjoying life and his music.
